Are my HIV test results confidential?
YES. The results are known only to our clinic and yourself. They are 100% confidential and will not be shared with your NHS practitioner or available anywhere outside of Pall Mall Medical. Results are available by call, text message or email which you can specify to the GP or Nurse/Practitioner taking your sample.
What HIV tests can I have?
Some HIV tests require just a pinprick of blood and can give you a result in 20 minutes, while others are blood tests which are sent to our laboratory. Testing options will vary depending on the number of days you are post-exposure risk (how soon since the suspected incident took place) and the turnaround time (the time taken for results to be returned by the lab). The types of test available are:
- Early Detection
The first type of tests available for early peace of mind from just 10 days following your exposure risk - whilst less accurate than the HIV Duo Test, it will give you an indication of infection sooner than waiting 26 days or more.
- HIV Duo Test
The HIV Duo test combines a HIV1 & HIV2 antibody test with an HIV p24 antigen test and this makes it the most accurate HIV screening available from 28 days since exposure. This test does not require any further clinical follow-up if negative, giving you total reassurance.
- Instant HIV Testing
If you are wanting a more immediate result, an Instant Test provides a result in just 20 minutes whilst you wait in the clinic. Results will be given to you in person by the practitioner taking the sample and is, therefore, a very discreet test.
How can you catch HIV?
The HIV virus is generally transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse. This can be during both vaginal and anal sex with a partner who is HIV positive. It is also well known that HIV can be transmitted through sharing needles, syringes, other drug injecting equipment and by blood transfusion with a person who is HIV positive.
What if my result is positive?
Pall Mall Medical have full access to professional advice from our GP's, counselling and further testing and pathology services should your sample return back reactive with a non-negative result.
