What happens during Male chest reduction surgery?

From your first call or email, we’re here to look after you. Whether you’re still researching about breast enlargement surgery and would like more information, or you’re ready to meet a surgeon to see what results you can achieve, our team of Patient Co-ordinator’s are here to help.

Consultation

At Pall Mall we pride ourselves at being with you every step of your journey and therefore before you undergo male chest reduction surgery there are a number of steps that we take. Primarily, at the consultation, the surgeon will ask you about your medical history and examine your chest area.

Your surgeon will ask you about your desired outcome, giving you a better idea of exactly what you want, the surgery itself and any risk that may be involved.

Pre-Operation

A nurse will perform a series of checks on your health prior to your surgery, so we request that you come in for an appointment. Here you will be checked for MRSA as well as a urine or blood test. We just want to make sure there are no complications further down the line and calm any nerves or anxieties you might have!

Your surgeon will also check your chest and take photos so that we have a medical record before the changes occur. Please use this opportunity to ask any questions or raise any concerns and our amazing team will be happy to help.

Surgery

When the day of your surgery arrives you will be greeted at the hospital by our staff and shown to your comfortable and spacious room. They’ll be a quick check-up to make sure you’re feeling well and healthy enough for the operation and then you’ll be taken to theatre for surgery.

The operation, will then take place, removing the access skin to give you a flatter, more masculine chest.

Post-Surgery

After this surgery, you will be able to go home on the same day. We will also arrange for you to come in for further appointments after weeks 1, 2 and 6. This way we can manage your progress and also give you the support so you don’t feel alone or anxious.

Please bear in mind that everyone recovers at their own rate, but avoid your normal activities for at least 2 weeks.

Aftercare

Our aftercare programme puts you at the centre and our staff are committed to helping you at every stage of your recovery. We have a 24/7 support line to connect you to our industry-leading nurses and make sure you are completely happy with your surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Our expert team are always hand to help, advise and arrange appointments with our specialist consultants.

When can I return to work after male breast reduction surgery?

This would depend on the nature of your job and how you are progressing with your recovery. It is common to require 1 week off work, but if you are an office worker, doing only light administrative tasks, you will be physically able to return much quicker than a person who has a more physical job. If you need to move/lift heavy items or have a very hands on job, it would be ideal to have longer for recovery period of 1-2 weeks off. It would be recommended to arrange a couple of weeks of lighter tasks after your procedure, as exertion can cause side-effects and reduce your recovery.

How long will I keep my bandages on after male chest reduction surgery?

The dressings used by the surgeon after your gynaecomastia operation will remain on usually during the first 1-2 weeks. The exact length of time will depend on how quickly your wounds heal, and whether your surgeon chooses to use dissolvable stitches or  removing these during your follow up appointments in clinic.

What can I wear after male chest reduction surgery?

For the first 1- 2 weeks after surgery you may be asked to wear an elasticated garment to provide support to your chest. This is required both during the day and overnight. It is important you have some support during the first 24 – 48 hours after surgery to help you at home. You must always have a chaperone (whether friend or family) to take you home when discharged.

When can you exercise after male chest reduction surgery?

You should avoid any strenuous physical activity, exertion through work or exercise during the first 2 – 3 weeks following surgery. This prevents any increased fluid accumulation and enables your body to focus upon healing faster.

When can you drive after male chest reduction surgery?

You can drive when you feel physically able to during your recovery. This is commonly around 1 – 2 weeks following surgery but is highly dependant on how fast you are recovering and regaining strength and suitable body control to be able to safely drive and meet the terms of your driving license.

How long does the operation for male chest reduction take?

Most surgeons will explain that a typical gynaecomastia procedure in theatre takes approx 120-150 minutes (around 2-3 hours). Although this can vary person to person. You will remain in hospital straight after surgery, with some patients being allowed to return home same day, and some may require 1x overnight stay. You will be given suitable advice when your theatre time is booked.

What causes gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia is a medical condition, the presence of excess breast tissue can occur for a number of reasons including weight loss, changes during puberty or a hormone imbalance that could cause increased levels of oestrogen and sometimes cause breast tissue to grow. If you have lost weight, surgery is a common solution to remove excess, saggy skin and tighten the appearance of your chest area.

Gynaecomastia is a common condition that affects men of all ages, from teenage boys to older men. It can affect men at any time in your life and therefore Male Breast Reduction Surgery is an option if you have this condition.

When is male chest reduction surgery not suitable?

Surgery is not for some men, especially when larger breasts are caused solely by excess fat from being overweight. Reshaping the male breast is not a weight loss solution, and your surgeon can advise you if a normal weight loss programme would be more suitable. This will reduce your risks without the need for surgery under general anaesthetic.

Why do I need to private for male chest reduction?

The NHS does not commonly carry out male breast reductions unless there is an associated and significant distress or pain. For this reason, many men choose to have the procedure done at a private healthcare clinic such as Pall Mall Cosmetics. There is no waiting list, and you do not need any referral to have an operation performed.

We can ensure your safety at our CQC (care quality commission) regulated hospital in Newton-le-Willows and city centre clinics in Manchester or Liverpool. Our surgeons mostly come from the NHS, so you get the same quality of surgery, but in a safe, clean and professional private clinical environment.

Our surgeons also strive for excellence, being members of BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) and BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic & Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons). A clear demonstration of our ability to meet the gold standard of care you would expect from an elite surgical hospital.
