What happens during a telephone or video appointment?

You can expect the same treatment you’d recieve in-clinic from your private doctor - but you can take it in the comfort of your own home through telephone or video link.

In terms of content, a telephone or video consultation will go through the exact same processes as if you were having a chat in-person, where you can discuss your concerns and symptoms.

From here, your GP can suggest treatment options and next steps, such as a scan, medication, further testing or a referral to one of our specialist consultants.

The doctor will contact you at the number you provide when you book a telephone appointment. Similarly, if you choose a video consultation, you’ll receive an email with a link.

When it’s time for your appointment, all you have to do is click on the link and follow the simple instructions to join your GP on video.

Our virtual GP surgeries are designed with you in mind.

So whether you’re out and about or settled at home, make sure you’re in a comfortable, quiet spot where no one can overhear you.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Our expert team are always hand to help, advise and arrange appointments with our specialist consultants.

Is it normal to bleed after a coil removal?
You might notice slight bleeding after removal of coil, but this settles shortly without any treatment at all.
Are there any aftercare procedures I should follow?

After fitting, your body will try to expel the coil, so you must have a follow-up check at 6-8 weeks after insertion to make sure that it is in right place. Then you should check the coil thread at the top of the vagina digitally after every 2-3 periods. The details will be fully explained at the time of fitting a coil.

You may wish to use a condom as well to prevent sexually shared infection. The coil will prevent pregnancy only.

Will my periods return to normal afterwards?

It is very normal for your periods to change after you have the coil removed. Usually the cycle goes back to how your original cycles were before coil was fitted.

What are the after effects once I get my coil removed?

Unless there is an infection, any effects of the coil will be reversed after removal.

Can I get pregnant after my coil is removed?

Yes, your natural fertility should return to normal. Coil is completely reversible and does not affect your future fertility at all.

Can a coil removal cause a miscarriage?

The coil is one of the best forms of contraception, but no method is 100% effective. Occasionally, women do get pregnant with a coil inside, but the coil itself does not cause miscarriage. If someone does get a positive pregnancy test with a coil inside, they must see a doctor as soon as possible to rule out the possibility of having a pregnancy inside the tubes (ectopic pregnancy).

I’ve been through the menopause, can I still get fitted?

You can’t get a coil fitted if you’re pregnant, so having one fitted after the menopause is fine. But your doctor need to discuss with you about all the options and to check why you wish to have a coil.

Do I need an anaesthetic for a coil fit?
Most women do not need any form of anaesthetic at all. If you prefer, doctor can use anaesthetic gel into the neck of the womb, but this is best suited for women who have never been pregnant.
I’m still bleeding after my coil fit, what could this be?

Some bleeding can be a completely normal side effect while your body accepts this foreign material inside you. A doctor can easily manage heavy bleeding with medicine without taking the coil out. After a few weeks, the periods usually return to your normal pattern.

What are the side effects of having an IUD fitted?

The immediate side effects of the fitting will be minor like some pain, discomfort and dizziness lasting for a few seconds to a couple of minutes. You may have some cramps for a couple of hours due to womb trying to expel the coil. There are small risks of injury to the womb (perforation) or inability to fit a coil, however, these are incredibly rare. Periods can also be slightly heavier with clots initially after having a copper-based coil.

Can I get fitted for a coil after my pregnancy has ended?
Yes, you can have a coil fitted straight after miscarriage or the termination of a pregnancy. But after a natural delivery, you should better wait until 6-8 weeks before having a coil fitted to ensure that your womb has returned to its normal size.
Does the fitting hurt?

Mostly women feel mild pain or some discomfort. If you experience painful periods, there is a chance that the fitting will be painful due to the narrow neck of the womb. However, the fitting of the coil is usually well tolerated by the body. That’s why the IUD is one of the safest and oldest modern contraception methods.

Can I get an infection from a coil fit?

It is very unlikely, there is a negligible risk of an infection from a coil fitting.

Will the coil fit stop my periods?

If you opt for a copper-based coil like TSafe which does not contain any hormones, then changes to periods are to be expected. Sometimes they will be lighter or heavier, but this should return to normal after the first year of having the coil. If you decide for a coil containing hormones like Mirena, your periods are more likely to be much lighter, or may even stop completely.
