This test involves having a dye inserted by a thin tube into the cervix. The dye is pushed into the fallopian tubes and uterus, pictures are taken by x-ray as the dye passes through. It usually takes around 30 minutes. The test is carried out to find the cause of a woman not being able to conceive.
It helps to see if fallopian tubes are blocked by infection, which has caused scarring and prevented pregnancy in the past. Sometimes the process of inserting the dye will push through and unblock the tube.
Some studies have indicated a slight increase in fertility when an HSG has been performed, lasting 3 - 4 months after.
Your consultant will perform your test as well as a radiographer, who will be able to talk to you and explain the process while doing it. You will be offered pain relief, as it may cause mild to moderate pain. It is also advised to have some at home.
